We’ll admit it, some houseplants have pretty particular needs that require a fair bit of attention, but there are also plenty who don’t! If you have struggled with houseplant care before, or are just getting started—worry not! There are plenty of easy-to-care-for houseplants to choose from that can stand a little bit of neglect. They all have a few basic needs to be met, but generally, everyone on this list is a pretty easy-going houseplant!
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a perfect, easy houseplant for those of you who tend to forget to water your plant friends now and again. Their plump, spiky leaves hold a ton of water, so they can withstand a fair bit of drought. They enjoy bright, indirect sunlight and should be watered deeply about once every two to three weeks (and even less in the wintertime!). Aloe is also wonderful to have in the house in the summer months as you can snap off one of their leaves and use the gel inside to get instant relief from a sunburn!
Snake Plants
Also known as Sansevieria, snake plants have an amazing architectural quality with their upright spikes of foliage. They are one of the toughest, easy-to-care-for houseplants out there. Overwatering is actually more detrimental to snake plants than underwatering. Just make sure its soil is almost completely dry before watering again. Snake plants are not very high-maintenance when it comes to lighting either. They prefer medium light but will fare just fine in low light conditions, as well.
Jade
These succulent’s plump, fleshy, oval-shaped leaves hold a lot of water, so similar to their friends above, Jade plants are perfect for those of you who tend to neglect your plants in the watering department. They do need a fair bit of bright light to grow to their full potential, and if cared for properly, they can actually grow to be anywhere from three to six feet tall eventually. It has been said that Jade plants can bring good luck to their owners, so they make for a lovely housewarming gift!
Cactus
Can you think of anything cooler than having a house cactus? Despite their spiky exterior, these cute desert dwellers come in all different shapes and sizes that can’t help but brighten up any room in the house. Cacti need to be kept in bright light, but keep an eye on them if they are in direct light by a window as, surprisingly, even a cactus can burn! If their window side starts to turn brown or yellow, that’s your sign to move them somewhere with a little more indirect light. Cacti need regular waterings, but like a snake plant, it’s best to let their soil dry out between waterings, so stick to about once a week or once every two weeks, and less in the winter while they are dormant.
Philodendron
The heartleaf philodendron is an absolute gem, largely in part because they are so easy to care for and have no issue with low-light environments. There are hundreds of different philodendron varieties, all of which come in a myriad of different colors, sizes and textures. They are generally characterized into two categories by their growth habit, depending on whether they are a climbing or upright variety. They enjoy moderate to low light and watering whenever the top inch or so of soil starts to dry. They don’t love wet feet, so be sure to drain out any excess water that collects in their tray. Or, make life even easier on yourself and raise your philodendron up slightly away from excess water by placing pebbles or a plant stand in the tray.
