Spring is usually a happy time, signifying joy, growth, and new life. While our circumstances this spring are slightly different, there’s still a way to find joy in the world around us through gardening. Pink flowers, in particular, are adored for their bright, fun shades, and the positive energy they bring to flower beds and container gardens alike. This year, brighten up your spring and summer garden with some of these pink garden-flowering favorites:
Anemone
These cute, buttercup-like blooms are the perfect addition to your midsummer garden. Although Anemones are sometimes tough to care for in Bismarck, our ‘Grape Leaf Anemone’ is a particularly hardy variety that doesn’t mind our USDA Zone 4a winters. It forms attractive clumps of single, blush-pink flowers. Plant your Anemones in part shade to full sun.
Aster
Asters are typically known for their purple and blue tones, but there are plenty of these prolific little flowers that bloom in rosy shades. We carry a striking, neon-pink variety called ‘Alma Potschke’ that will have butterflies flocking to your flower beds. We also carry a more lavender-toned Aster, called ‘Professor Kippenberg.’ Both varieties enjoy full sun and flower from late summer into fall.

Azalea
Azaleas, along with their cousins, Rhododendrons, are stunning, spring-blooming favorites. They’re available in a wide variety of colors, including many different shades of pink. If you’re looking for something rosy to plant in your garden or decorate your patio with, you’re in luck! We have pink, fuchsia, and bi-color (pink and white) Azaleas in-bloom right now!
Bee Balm
Calling all pollinator-conscious gardeners! As you can probably already tell by its common name, Bee Balm is a favorite amongst these buzzing bugs. More formally known as Monarda, this conspicuous flower is also great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. With blooms that burst with both color and nectar, you’ll love bright pink varieties in your garden, like ‘Grand Marshal,’ which can grow in part shade and full sun and ‘Petite Delight,’ which is especially fragrant.

Butterfly Weed
Another great choice for attracting pollinators—especially butterflies—is Butterfly Weed. These native plants bloom in flat clusters of tiny flowers. Although they’re typically orange, we carry an elegant pink variety that’s fit for a royal garden, aptly named ‘Cinderella.’ Since it grows naturally in North Dakota, you should have no problem maintaining these pretty, long-lasting blooms for years to come.
Dianthus
Dianthus is easily one of the most popular, summer-blooming perennials amongst our customers, and it’s easy to see why. It’s hard to match the striking colors and patterns of this bold bloom and the life that it brings to your yard. ‘Firewitch’ isn’t just a favorite of ours, it’s actually an award-winning Dianthus as the 2006 Perennial Plant of the Year! This variety is still popular to this day for its masses of magenta blooms, accentuated beautifully by its silvery foliage. We also carry other pretty-in-pink Dianthus’, such as ‘First Love’ and ‘Tiny Rubies.’

Lily
Perhaps one of the showiest perennials you can grow in your garden, Lilies are treasured for their towering, trumpet-like blooms and distinct, tropical patterns. If you’re longing for a tropical getaway, find solace in pouring yourself a fruity drink and enjoying your lilies on a hot day this summer. There are plenty of different varieties, many of which include pink in their color palette. Check out the classic ‘Stargazer’ or gorgeous ‘Pink Pixie.’
Peonies
If you haven’t already, we recommend getting peonies in your garden as soon as you can—you’ll be able to enjoy these classic, late-spring to early-summer flowers sooner rather than later! Choose from bold, hot pinks, like ‘Felix Crouse,’ ‘Kansas,’ or ‘Karl Rosenfeld,’ or opt for softer, rosy tones like ‘Sarah Bernhardt.’ Peonies enjoy part shade to full sun.

Purple Coneflower
Despite the name, coneflowers are actually available in many colors—including some awesome pinks! ‘Kim’s Knee High’ is a compact variety with bright pink petals that droop to reveal a copper-brown cone. As a bonus, this early-summer bloomer will sometimes reappear in the fall. If you’re looking for something especially showy, we also love the two-tiered ‘Double Decker’ Purple (but actually pink!) Coneflower. Like other coneflowers, it features a skirt of long petals at the base of the cone, but this double variety is also topped with a second layer of shorter petals!
It’s hard not to feel a little joyous when you’re faced with an abundance of bright pink flowers in your garden. In our opinion, they’re some of the most cheerful, energetic presences in any landscape! If you’re interested in our in-bloom azaleas or any other rosy-toned plant, please call us, and we will arrange curbside pickup for you.
