Did you know that NASA performed a Clean Air Study many years ago, which proved that many air-purifying plants out there can detoxify your home? They can suck everything from dust to germs to airborne toxins right out of the air so you and your family can breathe a little easier.
There are so many household products on the market these days that emit some pretty toxic stuff, so knowing that removing some of those toxins is as simple as adding more houseplants to each room gives us a little bit of a warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Here’s a list of our favorite air-purifying plants and the best rooms to place them in your home.
English Ivy
English Ivy does not try to get by purely on its good looks! While gorgeous perennial vine with one-of-a-kind foliage certainly looks beautiful cascading from a shelf or plant hanger, it will also remove icky things like airborne fecal particles from the air, making it an excellent choice for your bathroom!
It is also said to reduce mold levels in the home and can filter out xylene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air. Trichloroethylene can be found in refrigerants and carpet cleaners, so an English Ivy plant will also work its air-purifying magic well in a living room or kitchen.
Snake Plant
A Snake Plant’s unique, upright foliage will filter out chemicals like benzene, carbon monoxide, and toluene from the air. Studies have also proven that keeping a Snake Plant in your bedroom will help you sleep better as it releases oxygen at night. Snake Plants are also great for beginners as they are notoriously easy to care for as an added perk.
Aloe
An Aloe plant will not only soothe your sunburns but will also remove benzene and formaldehyde from the air, both of which are in detergents and varnishes. This air-purifying succulent will thrive in a sunny living room or kitchen window.
Areca Palm
A fan favorite for many reasons, Areca Palm will remove toluene and xylene from the air in your home. These are toxins you might find in adhesives or paint products, so if you have a storage room in your home or fancy yourself a visual artist, we recommend getting yourself an Areca Palm! This beauty also adds moisture to the air and is safe for any furry critters you might have running around your home.
Boston Fern
The shaggy foliage of the Boston Fern has graced homes since the Victorian Era. What they likely didn’t know at the time was that it was cleaning the air in addition to adding lush foliage to their indoor spaces! A Boston Fern will suck benzine (from plastics, fabric, and cigarette smoke) and formaldehyde (from household cleaners, detergents, and cheap furniture composed of particle board or plywood) out of the air. This makes a Boston Fern ideal for the bedroom, living room, or office! Boston Ferns enjoy a fairly humid environment, so be sure to mist it regularly to keep it thriving!
